What are Sealants?

Sealants are clear coatings that can be brushed onto the back teeth. Most patients’ back teeth have deep fissures, grooves and depressions that make these areas more susceptible to tooth decay. Because it can be difficult to keep the back teeth fully clean, we can fill in these areas with clear sealants. Most sealants can last for one to three years before replacement may be needed.

Why would Sealants be needed?

The reason you might benefit from sealants is because you have deep fissures and grooves on the back teeth. You might be more prone to tooth decay and are looking for a way to further protect your smile. You can prevent tooth decay and the need for subsequent procedures simply by having sealants applied. Sealants wear away naturally on their own and can be reapplied as often as necessary.

Who is a candidate for Sealants?

Most of our patients are good candidates for sealants. These protective coatings are ideal for both children as well as adults. Your back teeth should be natural and free of decay. We will examine your smile to determine if sealants are the right choice for you. If you had sealants applied in the past that have worn away, we can reapply them easily in the office.

What happens during the Sealant procedure?

We dry and then clean the back teeth before applying the sealants. We then brush a clear liquid varnish over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This liquid fills in the grooves, cracks and depressions that are present in these areas. Once all of the sealants have been placed, they are cured with a special light so that they do not wash away or move out of place. You can expect the brand new sealants to last for about one to three years depending on how much daily wear they receive. Once worn away, the sealants can be reapplied to further protect your smile.
