what are tooth-colored fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings utilize a composite resin material to replace areas of a tooth that have become decayed. Tooth decay is one of the most common dental conditions, affecting people of all ages. Before the decay is able to get worse, we remove it and place a small tooth-colored filling where it was located. Fillings can last for about 10 years before full replacement is necessary.

why are tooth-colored fillings needed?

The reason you might need a tooth-colored filling is because you have a cavity. Composite resin is safer and less compromising to the tooth when compared to amalgam (metal). Some patients choose to have their older metal fillings replaced with composite resin. These fillings are designed to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile so that no one will even know you have them.

who is a good candidate for tooth-colored fillings?

To determine if a filling is necessary, we’ll examine your teeth and may take x-rays. The x-rays alert us of dark spots on the teeth, which can signal areas of decay. Using a dental explorer instrument, we search the different surfaces of the teeth for softer areas which would be a sign that a cavity is present. If you need a filling, it is important to have the procedure done as soon as possible to prevent the decay from getting worse.

what happens during the procedure for tooth-colored fillings?

To begin, we will numb the area of the mouth in need of treatment using a local anesthetic. The decay is then carefully and thoroughly removed from the tooth. The hole that is left behind is prepped for the resin material. This is done by applying an etching gel and then washing it away completely. The composite resin is both poured and packed into the hole before being smoothed into place. The filling is cured with a bright light so that it stays in place and lasts you for many years.
