Dental Exams & Cleanings

What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Cleanings and exams are necessary steps in keeping your teeth healthy and clean. Even with the best brushing and flossing habits at home, you need to make time to come in every six months for a professional cleaning. Cleanings are designed to remove heavy buildup and surface stains from the teeth as well as check the health of your gums. Exams give us an in-depth view at the health of your teeth and mouth, providing you with treatment options when they’re needed.

Why would Dental Exams & Cleanings be needed?

Unfortunately, even with the best toothbrush and flossing products at home, you still need to have professional cleanings done every six months. This is because plaque can build up on different areas of the teeth, hardening into a substance known as tartar. Tartar can contribute to tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. To remove tartar effectively and safely, a professional cleaning is needed. Exams are needed because they help to spot minor issues before they are allowed to get worse.

Who is a candidate for Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Everyone is a candidate for both exams and cleanings. We recommend coming in every six months, regardless of age, to have a professional cleaning and exam performed. It’s never too late to get in for a dental appointment. We offer care in a judgement-free manner, so we welcome you into our office even if it’s been years since your last appointment.

What happens during your Dental Exams & Cleanings?

The first step is to perform a professional cleaning. This is done by our registered dental hygienist who uses special tools, known as scalers, to remove buildup from the teeth. An ultrasonic scaler may be used for quick and efficient cleaning of heavier buildup. The teeth are flossed, polished and the gums are checked for signs of gum disease. The exam is then performed to look for signs of decay, oral cancer and other dental problems. The entire appointment should take no longer than about an hour in our office.
